GCSD is a rural school district with 4 schools. For the 2026-2027 school year, classes begin August 27 and end May 27. Galena City School District includes IDEA Homeschool, one of the largest homeschool programs in Alaska, serving families across the state remotely from its base in rural Galena on the Yukon River. This calendar includes 4 early-release or half days — useful to know when planning childcare.
