SCSD is an urban school district with 15 schools. For the 2026-2027 school year, classes begin September 8 and end June 25. Schenectady is known as 'The Electric City' and its school district is noted as one of the most culturally diverse public school systems in upstate New York, officially closing for Holi/Phagwa and Eid al-Fitr in addition to standard holidays. The district has said a complete 2026-2027 calendar — including early dismissal dates, teacher workdays and grading period end dates — will be published soon. The calendar also notes several religious observances (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, Holi/Phagwa, Eid al-Fitr) for awareness — school stays in session on these days. This calendar includes 1 early-release or half day — useful to know when planning childcare.
