MCSD is a rural school district with 13 schools. For the 2026-2027 school year, classes begin August 12 and end May 28. The Monroe County School District seal carries the motto 'Excellence in the Monroe County Schools,' and one of its high schools, Sequoyah High School, is named after the Cherokee scholar who invented the Cherokee syllabary. The calendar sets aside 2 additional days (October 13–March 19) that may be used as weather makeup days if needed. This calendar includes 1 professional development day, 4 early-release or half days — useful to know when planning childcare.
